Old Rectory Barn dating from the 16th century was attractively restored in 2007 creating comfortable self catering accommodation in a sustainable environment. Situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, near Gilwern village, the Barn has been renovated to an extremely high standard with exposed beams, lots of light and a garden-patio area to take advantage of the lovely views across the valley. The Stables can accommodate 4, while the Loft is designed for 4-6. Independently each cottage makes a wonderful place for a holiday retreat, while together, they are ideal for a fantastic family celebration or group holiday. If you are looking for 5 star, pet-friendly self catering in Wales for between 4 and 10 guests then Old Rectory Barn is a fabulous choice.
Old Rectory Barn was described by the judges of the Wales Sustainability Awards as ‘an excellent example of ‘Green Tourism’ having been beautifully and ethically renovated with its environmental effects a priority”. We have reached the finals of the Environmental Agencies National ‘Water Save’ Awards and achieved a GOLD Green Business Tourism Award when in the scheme. We have recently installed an eco charger for electric vehicles.
This is wonderful walking country and we have developed a selection of walks of varying difficulty that all start and finish at the Barn. The Clydach Gorge is on the doorstep and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal within walking distance. There are mountain biking routes in the area and many a triathlete has trained on our hills but the canal provides a lovely flat bike ride for all the family. There is also a drying room for wet weather gear and secure storage for equipment.
Blaenavon World Heritage site is an easy drive as are many other areas of interest especially within the beautiful County of Monmouthshire with its rolling hills and wonderful castles. We provide a selection of day itineraries in the car or by public transport for those who are unfamiliar with the area.
There are plenty of activities for children in the area – horse riding near Crickhowell, canoeing on the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal or a fun ride on steam railways. If you are an adrenaline junkie there are plenty of pulse-raising activities in the Brecon Beacons – hang gliding and paragliding, kayaking, rock-climbing and abseiling. There are a range of 18hole golf courses while anglers have plenty of scope on the canal and the River Usk. The Barn is convenient for visiting the nearby market towns of Abergavenny and Monmouth which host craft fairs and antique markets.
The nearest village with shops and pubs and cafes that serve food is Gilwern but Crickhowell is only 3 miles away and Abergavenny 5 miles.
