Your creative spark is sure to be kindled when you come to learn how to hand spin or hand weave  at All in a Spin in the Brecon Beacons near Crickhowell – the perfect setting to be inspired by nature’s bounty.  Dunja’s studio is on a traditional hill farm nestled on the slopes of Pen Tir in the Black Mountains and the farm’s pedigree, native breed and rare breed sheep provide the materials for spinning and weaving.  Come and be immersed in life as it used to be – with time to be creative.

All in a Spin offers tuition in the following:

  • hand spinning – beginners, improvers and nationally accredited units
  • fibre preparation
  • spinning with exotic fibres
  • dyeing wool
  • weaving with the rigid heddle loom – beginners and improvers
  • sheep dog experience morning
  • lambing 24 hour course
  • sheep husbandry course

Beginners:  Individual or very small group teaching to learn hand spinning.  When you go home, you may wish to loan a wheel from me to continue practising.  If you do decide to take up the craft, I stock new and good quality second hand spinning wheels along with everything else you will need.

Improvers:  Learn how to influence the final appearance of your handspun yarn.  Experiment with different types of fleece and spinning styles.  A chance to demystify the art of spinning.

Fibre preparation:  Have you been spinning for a while and want to move on from using commercially prepared tops as your starting point?  Then this is the course for you!  Come and learn how to prepare fibre direct from fleece.  You will have the opportunity to experiment with longwool and lustre fleeces, downland fleece and alpaca among others, preparing them in different ways for woollen or worsted spinning.  Hands on experience of the drum carder, flick carder, hand carders and wool combs.  Spin samples to take away with you for inspiration for your next spinning project.

Exotic fibres:  A chance to experiment with new and different fibres and blends such as yak, bamboo, cotton, flax, silk and more …. Spin samples to take away to inspire you to design your own speciality blends.

Accredited units:  Now you can gain a nationally recognised certificate  for your hand spinning skills (from the Welsh awarding body Agored Cymru) – only available at All in a Spin.

Come and learn how to dye a rich palette of colours on wool – both fleece from the sheep and ready spun yarn.  On this one day course you will learn a variety of techniques and you will take home your own hand dyed locks of wool and skeins of yarn.

Beginners: Learn to weave a runner or a scarf in a day.  Checks, stripes and squares are a doddle with this easy to use, versatile table loom, and weaving your first item may set you on the road to weaving heaven.

Improvers: Branch out with your weaving to incorporate texture or lace structures, choose which on a choice of two improvers days.

Now’s your chance to have a go at working a sheep dog with experienced shepherd Brian Roberts.  You will accompany Brian on his rounds on the farm, feeding the sheep and then be treated to a demonstration of the wonderful partnership between a farmer and his working dogs.  Then you will have a go at working a dog yourself.  We finish up in the cosy, farmhouse kitchen with a cup of tea and cake, when you can ask as many questions as you like about life on a traditional hill farm.

A truly immersive experience, come and stay for 24 hours and see what lambing is really like!  Accommodation in our 4* annexe and lots of home cooking will help to make this a memorable experience.  There’s a theory session with comprehensive handouts for you to take away and lots of opportunity to get hands on in the lambing shed with the ewes and lambs.  You can even do the 3am shift with farmer Brian if you wish!

This one day course will give you plenty of information to get you started with keeping sheep.  As well as covering the theory, backed up with handouts for you to take home with you, there will be a chance to have a go at some of the routine tasks of sheep keeping such as turning a sheep up for foot trimming, running a sheep through a race, and how to restrain a sheep safely for veterinary treatment.
